About Department of Anthropology

Objectives and Missions of the Department:

The Anthropology department of Madhya Kamrup College, Subha was established on 27 November, 1997. As a prominent subject of social science, Anthropology department of Madhya Kamrup College is playing an active role in academic upliftment of the college. Most of the students have successfully completed degree program (general course) as well as Higher Secondary course. The Department started with a strong determination to impart Under Graduate teaching and also Higher Secondary courses. Its main aims and objectives are-

To impart regular teaching at the Under Graduate level and Higher Secondary level.

To develop human resource with special emphasis on the region where it is located. Most of the students have taken Anthropology as one of their optional subjects in HS level and some of them have got letter marks in this subject. Department so far could produce 1st class in UG level (general course) since its inception.


Department Profile

Infrastructure of the Department

  1. Museum: The Department has a small museum established in the year 2013. The museum is a good repertoire of few prehistoric tools, bones and skulls of both fossil men and modern man including many other ethnographic materials.
  2. Departmental Library: The library of the Department contains more than 50 books. A large number of Project Reports and Field Reports are available in the library. The library is accessible for teachers as well as students.
  3. Staff Common Room: A well furnished staff common room is available for faculty members of the Department. Separate table for both the faculty members have been arranged with sufficient space. A desk top computer is provided to the Department by the authority. A laptop was also provided to the Department in the year 2011.
  4. Laboratory: There is also laboratory facility for the students. All types of equipment for Physical Anthropology, Prehistoric Archaeology and Social Anthropology necessary for UG general course are available in the Department.

2016-17

  5. Organised an Educational Tour to Manas National Park in collaboration with Department of Education, MK College
  6. Practical exam for HS final year and 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th semester is organized by the Department

2017-18

  3. Freshers and Teachers Day is celebrated on 5th September, 2017
  4. A Group discussion on the topic “Material Culture of Assamese People” among the students of 6th semester is held on 3rd February, 2017
  5. Conducted field work for 6th semester classes to Hirapara Village in the month of February
  6. Departmental Wall Magazine Kristi is inaugurated in the month of May, 2017
  7. Practical exam for HS final year and 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th semester is organized by the Department

2018-19

  2. A Group discussion on the topic “Fossil Man of Pleistocene Period” among the students of 5th semester is held on 26th October, 2018

  2. Departmental Induction Program is held for the students of 1st semester on 5th August, 2019. From this session CBCS system is being introduced.
  3. A Group discussion on the topic “Tribal Studies” among the students of 5th semester is held on 13th November, 2019
  4. Conducted field work for 6th semester classes to Subha Village in the month of February
  5. Practical exam for HS final year and 1st , 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th semester is organized by the Department
  6. Conducted Project work for the students of 2nd semester as per syllabus

2020-21

  1. During Covid Period all the Departmental works are done in online Mode

2021-22

  2. A one day Lecture programme on the topic Bartaman Prekhyapotot Nritotto Adhyanar Prayojaniotais held on 2nd November, 2021.
  3. Departmental Wall Magazine Kristi is inaugurated on 29th November,2021
  4. A Group discussion on the topic “Research Methodology” among the students of 6th semester is held on 17th March, 2022
  5. 2 no. of Departmental Seminars are held among the students of 2nd semester on25th March,22 and among the students of 4th semester on 20th April,22. Topics are “Methods Techniques of Field work” and Tourism Anthropology respectively
  6. Conducted field work for 6th semester classes to Barpeta Satra in the month of February,22
  7. A Field Report is submitted to the IQAC of the College prepared by final year students with the help of teachers on January, 2022
  8. A MOU for five years was signed with Anthropology Department of MC College on 02-03-2022
  9. Participated in Cultural Procession of College Week
  10. Conducted Project work for the students of 2nd, 4th and 5th semester as per syllabus

  1. A 8 Day career guidance programme was jointly organized with Barpeta Girls College, Barpeta under MOU from 2nd June to 9th June, 2023
  2. Organised an awareness programme on Ecology and Environment on 5th June 2023
  3. Faculty exchange program for 2nd semester student was held under MOU with M C College, Barpeta on 10th June, 2023
  4. Faculty exchange program for 4th semester student was held under MOU with Barpeta Girls College, Barpeta on 14th June
  5. An Induction and Awareness Progamme on NEP 2020 for BA 1st semester students under UG FYUGP was held on 7th August, 2023
  6. A 5 Day workshop on Competence Building was jointly organized by Department of Anthropology and Economics in collaboration with IQAC from 24th August to 29th August,2023
  7. Organised “gronthalochana and ontorgo alap” on the occasion of World Teachers Day on 5th October, 2023 among the principal, teachers and students.
  8. Observed the “International Day of Poverty” on 17th October, 2023
  9. Participated in Cultural Procession of College Week
