About Department of Political Science

The Department of Political Science of Madhya Kamrup College is one of the oldest and most distinguished departments of the institution. Its history dates back to 9th August 1971, the year of establishment of the college, which was founded with the vision of extending the reach of higher education to the poor and disadvantaged communities of the Chenga region. With a humble beginning of a single teacher and around 105 students at the Pre-University level, the department laid a strong foundation for social science education in the college.

The department was initially headed by Sri Ramen Das, M.A., and over the decades, it was nurtured by several eminent teachers whose dedication shaped its academic culture. Notable among them were Mr. T.R. Nath, M.A., Md. Abdur Gafur Ali, M.A., and Sri Rajen Talukdar, whose contributions remain an integral part of the department’s legacy. Sri T.R. Nath also rendered valuable service as Vice-Principal and retired as the In-Charge Principal of the college in 1997. Md. A.G. Ali, a respected faculty member, served until his sudden demise in 2004.

The department welcomed new strength with the joining of Sri H.N. Talukdar as a lecturer on 1 March 1989 and Sri D. Kaibarta on 31 December 1990. Both served the institution with distinction, later leading the department and taking up roles as Vice-Principal and In-Charge Principal. Their contributions continued until their retirements in 2023 and 2020 respectively.

A new chapter began on 19 February 2024, with the appointment of Ms. Arpita Singha and Mr. Dipjyoti Das, who brought renewed academic energy and scholarly commitment. At present, the department is led by Sri Ripunjoy Deka, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department, while Sri Baneswar Bezbaruah, a senior faculty member, serves as the Vice-Principal of the institution.

Department Profile

Brief History of the Department:

The birth of Political Science Department in Madhya Kamrup College has gone back to 9th August 1971 along with the establishment of the college to bring higher education to the door steps of poor and disadvantaged people of Chenga area. The department of political science is otherwise considered as one of the oldest department of this college. It has a humble beginning in 1971 with a batch of about 105 students in pre University level and one teacher.

The department was headed by Ramen Das .M.A. at the beginning followed by Mr. T.R. Nath ,M.A Md. Abdur Gafur Ali M.A Sri Rajen Talukdar, eminent teacher had also served this college. Sri T.R. Nath retired on31.08 1997 .Md. A.G. Ali suddenly died on 13.10.2004 during his service period. Sri T.R. Nath extended his service as Head of the Department as well as Vice-Principal and retired as in charge –Principal of this college.On1st March 1989, Sri H.N. Talukdar joined as a lecturer of this department. Sri D. Kaibarta joined on 31.12.1990.Sri H.N. Talukdar had also served as the Head of Department as well as the Vice- Principal and in charge - Principal of this college and retired on 1st of February, 2023.Sri D. Kaibarta an eminent teacher had also extended his service as Head of Department as well as in charge – Principal of this college and retired on 31 - 10 – 2020.

Along with it two of our newly appointee Miss Arpita Singha and Dipjyoti Das joined the department on 19-02-2024. Sri Ripunjoy Deka is currently the HOD of the Department and Sri Baneswar Bezbaruah from the esteemed Department serves as the Vice-Principal of the Institution.
